Scene 1: Fascination
Jay is a plumber who is not doing so great money wise. He knocks on Smith’s house for an on call plumbing issue. He arrives with tight white wifebeater vest with his tools. Smith, a cardiologist, is impressed by his physique and asks Jay whether he is keen to be his test subject for some money. Smith tells Jay that he is fascinated by the near death experience like in flatliners. Jay is initially unsure, but Smith convinces him that it is totally fine. Because Jay needs the money, he agrees to be a subject.
Scene 2: Fitness testing
Smith asks Jay to come to his practice. Jay takes off his white vest showing his chiselled torso. Smith records Jay’s resting heartbeat (record here.. lub dub lub dub) and he enjoys being serenaded by Jay’s strong heartbeat. Smith asks Jay to accelerate his heartbeat. Smith attaches ECG leads on Jay’s chest and tells him to do 10 burpees. Then Smith listens to his heartbeat again (record here). Jay is then doing several other exercises including push ups, jumping jacks, and arnold press. Smith records Jay’s heartbeat after each exercise. Smith is really impressed by Jay’s heart. He think Jay is the perfect flatliner experiment subject.
Scene 3: First experiment
Smith asks Jay to sit on a sofa. Smith attaches AED pads in Jay’s chest for his revival. He assures Jay “Don’t worry, I will revive you”. Smith then injects adrenaline onto Jay’s chest. Jay convulses and flatlines. Smith confirmed that there’s no pulse nor breathing. Smith waits for 30 seconds, then drags Jay’s body to the floor. Smith begins CPR and rescue breathing. He then presses the AED to deliver a shock. No response. He continues with CPR-breathing-AED shock again. Still no response. Smith tirelessly resuscitates Jay, and after the eighth shocks, Jay shows sign of life. Smith was so worried that he won’t bounce back to life. “I nearly lost you there.. but you’re here!”. Smith records Jay’s heartbeat again (record here) to ensure no damage is sustained by his heart.
Scene 4: Jay got addicted
Jay knocks on Smith’s door, wearing again a tight vest. He tells Smith that after the flatline experience, he can’t stop thinking about it. He keeps seeing the tunnel, and the light. He wants to go back there and flatline again. Well, actually he needs more money. Smith agrees to pay again with a condition that Jay will need to flatline longer. Jay agrees for double the money. Then Smith undresses him and places ECG and AED getting ready for the experiment. Smith records Jay’s heartbeat again (record here).
Scene 5: Final showdown Jay lies in a “hospital” bed hooked ip to monitors and AED. Smith again injects double dose of adrenaline directly to his heart. Jay convulses more violently and flatlines. Smith waits for one minute this time – no heartbeat present. After one minute, Smith begins resuscitation efforts. CPR-breathing-AED shock. First time – no pulse. Second time – still no pulse. Smith shocks him tirelessly for eight times and he still can’t manage to recover Jay’s pulse. He says “one more shock, then I’ll give up”. One last shock .. and still flatlines. Smith covers Jay’s body with a sheet. Then out of sudden Jay comes back to life and starts breathing deeply and violently like he is drowning. Smith cannot believe what he sees. Jay keeps saying “the tunnel.. the tunnel..”. Smith records Jay’s heartbeat for the last time (record here) and the scene draws to a close.
