Jordan and Ryder’s Rainbow Baby

Scene 1: Jordan and Ryder are standing near the door. Jordan is very pregnant, basically full term. Ryder is leaving for work. Ryder talks about how he feels guilty for leaving Jordan all day and that he wishes he was on paternity leave already. He is disappointed he has to miss their last checkup with the doctor before the birth. Ryder assures him that he and the baby will be fine at home and that he will tell him all about the appointment when he gets home. They kiss goodbye. Ryder gets on his knees and plants a kiss on Jordan’s belly. “Bye princess. Can you give daddy a little kick?” There’s a pause before Darren gets up. Rubbing his tummy Jordan says “baby girl must still be sleeping. I’m sure she’ll be doing flips and kicks soon.” Ryder leaves.

Scene 2: Doctor’s appointment with Jay. Jordan and Jay are catching up. Jay remarks on how big Jordan has gotten, and Jordan agrees, talking about how he has just exploded these past couple of weeks. Jay asks some general check up questions. Jordan makes an off hand remark how the baby has been super active lately. But come to think of it, he does not even think he has felt her move today. At this, Jay looks concerned but doesn’t say anything. He begins the ultrasound then. Jordan is oblivious that anything is the matter. He’s happy to see his baby and remarks how big she’s grown in the last month since his last checkup. All the while, Jay is saying nothing with a concerned look on his face.

Jay then delivers the serious news. “Jordan, I am so sorry. But there’s no heartbeat.” There’s a moment of silence before Jordan asks, in a stunned state of shock, “what do you mean no heartbeat?” He begins to babble, his voice panicked with emotion. “The baby… she’s right there on the screen. There has to be a heartbeat. Jay patiently explains that he’s so sorry, but there is nothing he could do and that this is nobody’s fault. It’s terrible, but sometimes these tragedies happen. Jordan is distraught. Jay tells Jordan that his nurse called Darren, and he is on his way.

Scene 3:

A brief reunion scene where Ryder rushes into the office to Jordan’s side. He came as soon as he got the call. The couple embraces each other, consoling each other, both distraught and feeling like they are living a nightmare.

Scene 4: Jordan has to now birth their stillborn child in the hospital. This scene shows Jordan at the very end of labor (not a full labor scene, just the final push(es). Ryder is by his side supporting him, rubbing his back, holding his hand, etc., telling him encouraging things such as “you are so strong babe. The strongest person I know. Almost there now.” Jay asks for one more big push, and the baby is out. Jordan collapses into Ryder’s arms, and they console each other during this terrible moment.

Scene 5: *6 months later* Jordan and Ryder are in the doctor’s office. Dr. Jay comes into the room and says he knows how eager the couple is to start their family, and he’s happy to see them trying again. Jordan and Ryder have been trying to conceive again for a few months with no luck. Dr. J says that he finally got the fertility lab results back, and he is sorry to say that the news isn’t better. Jordan only has a very low chance of ever conceiving again. Not impossible, but highly unlikely. The couple is upset by this news, having been dealt another blow. Ryder consoles Jordan, telling him not to give up hope.

Scene 6: Ryder and Jordan are in bed cuddling. Ryder tells Jordan he’s been thinking about something a lot… he wants to try for another baby. Jordan cuts him off, saying he heard what the doctor said. That the odds of them having another baby are near impossible. Ryder says well about that… what if he carried the baby. Jordan is surprised and asks him if he’s sure? When they talked about parenthood, Ryder was adamant of not wanting to get pregnant. Ryder says he knows what he said, but what they have been through has changed his perspective on everything… he is sure. The two of them were meant to be parents and he wants to sacrifice for their family.

Jordan is emotional, and the couple begins to kiss, getting hot and heavy. Ryder tells Jordan let’s start trying now. “Get me pregnant” he says, and the couple begins to have faux sex.

Scene 7: It’s Jordan’s birthday, and he and Ryder are sitting on the couch. Ryder hands Jordan a wrapped gift and says he has one more present for him to open. Jordan opens it and pulls out a positive pregnancy test. Jordan is stunned and then the elation sets in. The couple lovingly celebrates that Ryder is pregnant and that they are expecting.

Scene 8: ultrasound appointment. Ryder is showing. Dr Jay is very happy to see them back. They go through the normal checkup, and the doctor asks if they’d like to know the sex. They say no. They explain that they don’t care what the sex of the baby is. Boy, girl, does not matter to them as long as the baby is healthy and has a heartbeat.

Scene 9: Ryder is heavily pregnant now and is rubbing his belly in bed. Jordan comes in and joins him, asks how the baby is doing. As if on cue, the baby gives a big kick causing Ryder to wince in discomfort. Jordan begins to admire Ryder’s belly, rubbing it and planting loving kisses. They snuggle up to each other and start talking about how they can’t believe all they’ve been through together and what a rollercoaster it has been. Jordan says if all goes well, they’ll have their little one home in just a couple of weeks. Ryder assures him all will go well. Jordan is skeptical but Ryder says he just needs to have faith. He tells Jordan that there’s no one else he can imagine going through this journey with. The couple begins to kiss. Things get hot and heavy and Jordan asks Ryder if he wants what he thinks he wants. Ryder nods, and they begin to have faux sex while he is heavily pregnant

Scene 9: a brief scene of post sex, blissful cuddling where they talk about how awesome it was, and how Jordan says Ryder is so sexy pregnant. The cuddling is cut short when Ryder realizes something strange: his water just broke! Jordan is confused… they should still have a couple of weeks. Ryder tells him the baby had other plans… he read that sex can trigger labor sometimes at the end of pregnancy.  and they need to get to the hospital.

Scene 10: labor and delivery. Fairly straight forward. Jordan is very supportive as Ryder gives birth to their child. A beautiful baby boy. When the baby comes out, Dr J should announce “it’s a boy! You have a healthy baby boy!” Ryder should be emotional, physically and emotionally spent/exhausted. Jordan should praise him, telling him how strong he is. “You did it babe. We have a son! We’re parents!” Dr J brings the baby to the new parents who marvel over their little miracle. They announce his name for the first time.

Epilogue: The new daddies are asleep in bed when we hear crying off screen. Groggy, Jordan gets up and brings the baby to bed, shushing and cooing at him as he passes him to Ryder, who rocks him in his arms and puts him to his chest to feed. The baby stops crying as it begins to feed. The little family is huddled together as Jordan feeds the baby, looking down at him in love and wonder, talking about how happy they are.
